Giving youth in Hokianga access to a wider range of education.
What We Do
Hokianga Awhi Trust began with a simple mission: to give our youth a step up in life, by supporting and preparing them to thrive through education, sport, life and daily structure that they would not otherwise have access to.
The harbour and the many streams that flow in and out of the Hokianga symbolise our mission to provide strong educational opportunities for local Tamariki and Rangitahi to attend boarding school around Aotearoa.
Just as the streams flow outward and explore the Hokianga and back again, they never lose their connection to home.

Frequently Asked Questions

At our trust, the selection of tamariki for the scholarship is not based on academic or sporting achievements. Rather, our focus is on identifying deserving individuals who would benefit from new opportunities offered by a boarding school setting giving them structure, further education and life experiences they wouldn’t otherwise have access to.
While we do not have strict criteria, it is important for there to be a level of support from the whānau, particularly concerning transportation and assistance with certain aspects throughout their time at school.

Given the limited resources and the fact that our organization relies on the dedication of three volunteers, we aim to be realistic in our capacity. At any given time, we plan to have a maximum of 5 children enrolled in the program each year.
This decision is rooted in our commitment to not over-promise and under-deliver. We want to ensure that we can provide the necessary attention, support, and resources to each child under our care. Additionally, our funding capacity plays a crucial role in determining the number of children we can support annually. When a child joins in Year 9, it becomes a 5-year commitment for us, and our objective is to secure sufficient funding to see them through their entire educational journey. This approach ensures that we can uphold our commitment to each child’s welfare and education over the course of their time with us.
