Awhi - To Care

Together, we can make change

For less than the price of a coffee per week - you can create generational change

It can be hard to know where you can send funds and know there will be a deep level of impact. We saw direct problems in our community and saw how they could be solved. The Hokianga Awhi Trust directly uses all funds to provide a better schooling experience for youths that need a hand up, not a hand out.

What we do

Hokianga Awhi Trust has been set up to help and support Hokianga tamariki and their whānau.

We provide funding, education and support to young people from the Hokianga to attend boarding school.

The tamariki we support come from homes who value education but, due to the high cost of attending boarding schools in rural NZ, it makes the opportunity out of reach for their whānau.

our vision

what do our tamaraki (children) really need?

Some of our greatest young minds simply need the right environment to foster their gifts. Let’s face it, the small town high school might not be the best place for the leaders of tomorrow to find their feet and solidify their beliefs. These children need the funds and support to attend boarding schools and that’s not cheap. Here’s what we do with your money.

Uniforms

So our kids can look their best and feel their best in every day.

School Fees

School fees covered - by the wider community. The ways it's always been

Boarding Costs

We also cover the fees associated with attending boarding hostels

Extra Curriculars

Not just sports. When appropriate we make sure the kids have a pocket money and a phone thats topped up.

Travel Costs

We make sure that our kids not only can get to school, but get home to see their whanau too.

Equipment

No opportunity missed because money is the barrier. We work to cover the tools and gear needed to excel

How can you help?

Currently, we are supporting two tamariki per year, at an approximate total cost of $30,000. They are in the program for 5 years.

We are asking for people to donate to the trust, so that we can continue to support these tamariki and future tamariki who will join the program.

Costs include school and boarding fees, uniforms, and other expenses that mean they can join in on extracurricular activities that they’d otherwise miss out on.

There is a range of different ways to get involved; regular weekly payments are the preferred option, alternatively monthly/annually or one-off. Hokianga Awhi Trust is a charitable trust, so donation receipts are available if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions are not only expected, they are welcome. We’ve answered everything we can here but are always available to chat or answer anything not covered in this set.

At our trust, the selection of tamariki for the scholarship is not based on academic or sporting achievements. Rather, our focus is on identifying deserving individuals who would benefit from the opportunities offered by a boarding school setting, enhancing their structure, education, and life experiences.

While we do not have strict official criteria, it is important for there to be a level of support from the whanau, particularly concerning transportation and assistance with certain aspects throughout their time at school.

It varies depending on the school. To give a rough idea:

The scholarship amounts vary depending on the school, and to provide a general overview:

For MAGs, the scholarship typically ranges from $20,000 to $25,000.

At Whangarei Girls High, the scholarship amount generally falls between $12,000 and $15,000.

These amounts are designed to cover not only boarding and school fees but also include provisions for sporting activities and other extracurricular pursuits. It’s important to note that the specific cost can vary for each individual child based on their unique needs and circumstances.

We are committed to transparency and accountability in our operations. As a registered charitable trust, we provide detailed financial statements on an annual basis. If you are a contributor and would like more information on the specifics of our financials, we are more than happy to share these details with you. Please feel free to reach out to us directly, and we will ensure that you receive the comprehensive information you are seeking. Your support and interest in our organization are greatly appreciated.

To date, our trust has had the privilege of supporting and guiding 7 children through their educational journey. Given the limited resources and the fact that our organization relies on the dedication of three volunteers, we aim to be realistic in our capacity. At any given time, we plan to have a maximum of 5 children enrolled in the program each year.

This decision is rooted in our commitment to not over-promise and under-deliver. We want to ensure that we can provide the necessary attention, support, and resources to each child under our care. Additionally, our funding capacity plays a crucial role in determining the number of children we can support annually. When a child joins in Year 9, it becomes a 5-year commitment for us, and our objective is to secure sufficient funding to see them through their entire educational journey. This approach ensures that we can uphold our commitment to each child’s welfare and education over the course of their time with us.

WHAT OUR COMMUNITY IS SAYING
